Pepeha
Pepeha is a Māori way of introducing oneself, in Aotearoa. It's about where and who you come from. It is the weaving of the invisible thread that lead us being who we are.
My ancestors comes from different places from Brazil. Get to know me through my pepeha, a short slideshow that captures who I am, my history, my family and my ancestry.
FOR THE ONES THAT CAME BEFORE ME
A long look inward.
I seek in the scent of the wind
the mystery of birth,
where we came from.
I return to the first dry leaf.
There, two eyes open,
a cry learns to breathe.
It was born.
A miracle without a frame, a naked work, a light lit without us knowing
who lit the path.
Like roots seeking the soil,
we anchor memory and remember where we came from,
not to stay, but to take flight
the flight of our soul and our dreams.
Ahead, on the horizon
that opens before us.
There are values that do not fit into time, nor into inherited expectations values that remain alive
when the air changes.
To honor is not to repeat paths,
it is to allow life to continue.
It is to carry in the body
the scent, the skin,
the center and the margins.
To know those who came before
is to be born again.
It's about rebuilding the canoe that guides you, trusting the river of life
with the direction that carries you
It's about being able to say, with your whole body: from here I came,and, from here on,the river widens, and I follow —the whole worldis my direction.
This habit of mine, of liking things naked.
Without covers, without shells.
Sometimes hard.
So too are the stories of the family:
sometimes hard, sometimes sweet,
but always seeds,
holding within themselves
the potential of life
when they receive light.
I am not just the blood that flows now.
I am the echo of many voices.
I walk on strong bones,
under stars that still guide me.
I am root, trunk, and leaf in flight.
I am a river between mountain and sea.
Behind my voice there is another voice,
and another,
and another —
an ancient call,
like a bird over dark fields.
Phases, comings and goings,
encounters and departings.
At some point in time,
lineages chose to cross.
Gazes decided to stay.
Hands decided to plant.
Now we are here.
And to think that, behind each of us,
there are thousands who came before.
And that, within us,
rest the seeds of those yet to come.
We are not just the blood that flows now.
We are the echoes of many voices,
of dead and fulfilled desires.
I am greateful for those who fed meand those who fed the one who fed me.
I carry in my gaze
the strength of those who came before.
Now I continue, with what is.
Family changes address,
but not its essence.
It has rights and wrongs,
silences and arguments,
names spoken and others kept.
Distant or near,
is the ones without we would not be here
Today I give light to the old sadness,
of what could have been and wasn't,
to the anger of wanting it to be different from what it is,
to the fear of going and following, contradicting, betraying,
to the premature departures
and the unspoken secrets.
I give light to the repeated joy
and the stories told a thousand times.
I give light to the paths opened by force,
to the arrows that facilitated the passage of the new.
May the strength and blessing of each generation always reach and flood to the next generation.
This is the house where I belong.
Not made of walls,
but of living memory.
Here I learned, from this land,
to love all things.
And I celebrate
the existence of each one of us.
